VIP Program

In 2008, we created a VIP program for Pride Partners who have made a donation of $50 or more to the Pride event. These special Pride Partners received two VIP passes that would entitle him or her and a guest to use of the special VIP gate at the festival entrance, VIP seating in the entertainment pavilion, and an outdoor area where VIPs could relax in comfort in the shade.

Quick Tickets

This was also the first year during which Presale tickets (Quick Tickets) to the Festival were available through our website. These presale tickets were $10 each, plus a small PayPal fee, and allowed you to use the VIP gate at the festival for quick and hassle free entry into the festival. You didn’t have to wait in a long line at the start of the festival and you could present your Pride Quick Ticket at the beer garden for a $1 off each beer for the first hour ONLY of the festival.

A Free Float Building and Parade Workshop

This was a free workshop, held on May 8th at the Living Room at WestCare, open to ALL potential float and parade participants. The workshop presenter was Ray Pulver of Upbeat Parade Productions, who has worked on floats in the San Francisco Pride Parade. Upbeat has designed and built more than 40 award-winning floats for businesses, organizations and cities in California and Massachusetts.

The float-building workshop was geared for amateurs. If you have a community organization or business wanting to participate in the parade with a float, this was a workshop that could help you build a great entry. This workshop provided ideas for all aspects of float building including design concept, vehicles to use for a float, building and decorating materials to use, and how to present a float on parade day. Upbeat Parade Productions has presented this workshop for parades and conferences in cities across the country including; Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco, CA; Las Vegas, NV; Boise, ID; and El Paso, TX.

Doing business as Upbeat Parade Productions, Ray Pulver is an event producer and consultant with over 25 years of experience, having worked with many different types of parades from small town and ethnic parades, to regionally and nationally televised parades. In addition to parades, he has coordinated drum and bugle corps competitions, marching band shows, street festivals, craft shows, and worked as a Special Events Coordinator for the City of San Jose, California.

Mr. Pulver has been a  speaker on the topic of parades and related events, Ray has spoke at Universities, IFEA, CalFest, DCI, and Pacific Coast Judges Association classes, seminars and conventions in cities throughout the country including; New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Las Vegas, Omaha, Boise, San Jose and other cities throughout Northern California. He has had the honor of serving as a parade float judge for several parades on both the west and east coasts, including for the nationally renowned Portland Rose Festival, Grand Floral Parade in Portland, Oregon, the second largest all floral parade in the United States and the renown Carnaval Parade in San Francisco.

Melissa Knight is the owner of Knight Consulting, an organizational consulting, training and development company specializing in capacity building for nonprofit agencies. A nationally certified trainer (National Center for Nonprofit Boards and Achieve Global), her expertise includes diversity, strategic planning and communication, public relations, marketing and fund development. Melissa earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism - Public Relations from California State University, Fresno, a Masters in Organizational Behavior from California School of Professional Psychology, Fresno, and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Organization Development at Alliant International University. A partial listing of clients includes Centro La Familia Advocacy, Inc., Fresno West Coalition for Economic Development, The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura – Central Coast Affiliate and WestCare California, Inc.

Melissa is a faculty member of the Women’s Studies Departments at California State University, Fresno (since 1999) and Fresno City College (since 1996). She teaches a number of courses, including Introduction to Lesbian and Gay Studies at both institutions. With an emphasis on being the change you want to see in the world, she challenges her students to get involved in community organizations as an integral part of each course. Her students, along with members of FCC’s Diversity Club planned and hosted the first-ever gay pride event at Fresno City College in May 2006 because the concept of an FCC Pride event was a group project option on her syllabus. The recent 2007 event attracted even more community and campus-wide support, with her student’s projects – The Marriage Ceremony; The Panel of Community Speakers and the Gay Trivia Game serving as central components for the 2007 event. With financial support from the Women’s Studies Program and the College of Social Sciences, she and several of her CSUF students worked on the 2006 Transgender Day of Remembrance along with several community members, including Planned Parenthood Mar Monte staff and volunteers. TDOR 2006 at the Pearl Gallery downtown garnered the largest turnout in the event’s history in Fresno.

Melissa has been a community activist her entire life, fighting for the rights of all, especially those marginalized in our society. The mother of children with special needs, her volunteer and activist work has focused on issues important to us all: rights and access for persons with disabilities, breast cancer research, education, support and treatment for lesbians, women of color, poor women, women in rural areas and young women, marriage equality, community development and empowerment. Over the years she has volunteered in various capacities with several LGBTQ organizations, including Gay United Services/Central Valley AIDS Team/Central California AIDS Foundation, REEL Pride, Central California Alliance, and United Student Pride at CSUF. In 1999, Melissa was honored by the Imperial Dove Court which bestowed an honorary Court title her community work.

Melissa and her life partner/wife, Terri, have two children – the Diva, Marissa, 18, (who’s graduating from high school this year!) and Joshua, 10 (the athlete in the family!).

Bill Bassett was born in Hanford, CA, raised in Armona, and went to Hanford High. He moved to San Luis Obispo to study at Cal Poly. He realized he was gay as a young teenager, but he was a late bloomer and never “played around in high school.” In college, in SLO there was a place you were allowed to be gay in - "right by a bus stop" - and it was the first gay hangout he'd ever been.

After coming back to Fresno, around 1977, someone talked him into running for Mr. Red Lantern. During the contest he had to "stand there and look somewhat decent". "Somehow," he says "I won and didn't have to do anything as a titleholder," but for his step down he did strip tease on the pool table. The Red Lantern back then was only one-half of the current building and the pool table was basically the stage. Someone in the crowd came up to him to tip him a couple bucks into his leather shorts that had snaps, and the strip tease nearly ended in full “monty.”

When he first came out in Fresno, the Pinelake Lodge on old Hwy 99 and Ashlan was the popular hang out in the 70s. He recalls other bars, such as Orange Ogre coffee house downtown - that's where Bill saw for the first time Mother Billy doing a drag show. He got shortly involved with the IDC because of a monarch he was "chasing", around the time IDC was just forming. He was also representing IDC at the San Francisco Coronation in mid-70s, and he remembers the Empress wore an outfit made of long quail feathers.

Then he met John Alsup at the Red Lantern, found out there was a new club in town, the Golden State Bears. Bill decided to run for Mr. Golden State Bear, which was a new contest set up to celebrate the anniversary of the GSB. He was the first ever winner, in 1995. After winning the title he got involved in the club's affairs and the following year he represented Fresno at International Bear Rendezvous contest in San Francisco. He's been a GSB member since, and most years he has been on the club board - holding the office of President for 4 years, then also Treasurer and Secretary. This year he is the President again.

Under Bill's guidance as President the Golden State Bears started to raise funds and goods for charity more so than before. He had brought organization into the club that was very loosely formed and almost too laid-back. He says of it: "I didn't want it to be like work, but it IS work." He is the face behind over $10,000 in donations, checks and boxes of canned goods given to a myriad of local charities. He’s also Santa Bear every December (first at the Cave, now at the Den) in his red hat and jockstrap, sitting on his throne, handing out candy canes and hugs in exchange for canned goods and photographs. Still, he considers his involvement in the community very much in the background - watching the events and coming out to support them rather than be an activist in the spotlight. He says: "I like to try to have fun [with the club] and I probably put passion into it. As with anything, when I'm doing it, I don't like to do it half-heartedly."

These days, Bill is a happy homeowner with his partner John (they shared their garden with the community one year as part of Community Link's Fall Garden Tour), enjoys gardening and their "weenie babies": Koenigen and Herzog.

Bill has an ambitious plan for the future. He would like to talk to anyone who has any knowledge of history, documents, photographs, posters regarding past and current gay bars in Fresno. His dream is to publish a coffee-table book on the subject!

After four, tireless years, the GSA @ Madera High was finally officially recognized! For their perseverance, stamina and pride, the student activist of Madera High Schools GSA are honored as Creating Change Grand Marshals.

It all started back in our second semester of our sophomore year where Martha Caballero gave us the idea of starting a GSA at our school. So after some thought we decided to start the Madera GSA.
We were informed that the district administration would take up to 6 months before the GSA would be officially approved. So instead we started our group at the Pan-American community center here in Madera.
As time passed we attended a youth summit here in Madera and participated in a workshop led by Robin McGehee and 2 of her youth. They told us more about the GSA Network and how to get more involved. This information led us to join their youth council. It was at this point that we decided again to have the our group be recognized on campus as a GSA. At first, during our 2nd semester of our junior year, our group became a campus "interest group".
As we waited, and waited, for the board to hear our case on their consent agenda, I made calls and went personally to the Madera Unified School District office. Our group was being ignored.
Finally by our 1st semester of our senior year, after going back and forth from one person to another in the administration, we got tired of being treated unfairly. With the help of the GSA Network and an Attorney from the ACLU the board finally came to a conclusion and approved our GSA Club.
We were all excited to have made this great accomplishment. We have started a path for the rest of our peers and hope that we can continue to highlight the diversity that for so long has been suppressed.
Having a safer campus for our LGBTQ and our straight allies is so important. By stopping hate we are stopping intolerance and ignorance.

Cinthia Covarrubias, a student at Fresno High, was a candidate for Prom King as a female!

A transgender candidate for prom king made an elegant appearance to the Fresno High School dance in a tuxedo, but missed winning the title, school officials said. Cinthia, 17, identifies as transgender. Gay youth advocates believe it was the first time in the U.S. that an openly transgender student had run for prom royalty. A prom is a high school dance held in the spring for students who are about to graduate. School officials added the teen's name to the ballot for prom king Thursday although she is biologically female, reversing a previous district protocol allowing only males to run for king and only females to run for prom queen. The district's lawyers had recommended the change to comply with a state law protecting students' ability to express their gender identity on campus. Covarrubias' peers, however, elected one of her six male competitors, Dan Abril, as prom king on Saturday at an outdoor reception hall festooned with Chinese lanterns Saturday night, Fresno Unified School District spokeswoman Susan Bedi said. School officials did not announce runners up, or the number of votes received by any candidate. Supporters still hailed Covarrubias' campaign as a major victory for gender expression on campus. "I hope this opens up something new," Covarrubias said before Saturday's crowning. "I've been really excited about it and feeling a lot of hope."

Johnny “Crystal” Vera is the winner of the Prom Queen title earlier this year at Roosevelt High School for Arts in Fresno. That event made national news, because Crystal considers herself transsexual. Here’s what she wrote for our program:

“My name is Crystal Vera and I am a true believer of the power of making a difference. I try to be a positive role model to the people that surround me. I am someone very caring and someone that carries herself with respect and dignity. I have a very positive outlook on life. I am more concerned with helping other people before myself. I am determined when I set myself goals and I never stop until I accomplish them. One of my biggest dreams is to become a famous fashion designer. I am very thankful and grateful for any advice or help that people give me. My dream in life is to help by making it easier in any way that I can for other transsexuals and just teach them to love themselves for who they are, but at the same time to teach myself self-acceptance and respect. With that said, I want to take the time to thank every person and organization for making my goals easier to reach. Thank you!”

Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) is a chapter-based national grassroots organization solely devoted to securing marriage equality for same-sex couples. The MEUSA Chapters located in the Central Valley (San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Fresno and Bakersfield) have done an exceptional job of raising local visibility and outreach in their local communities. The Central Valley MEUSA Chapters have put a local face to the issue of marriage discrimination through events such as the annual marriage counter actions on Valentine's Day, which are covered in the Fresno Bee, Modesto Bee, Central Valley Report and other local community TV, radio and newspapers. MEUSA Central Valley Chapters have attended community festivals like Earth Day and Fourth of July parades, organize counter-responses to Fred Phelps protests and several of the volunteer MEUSA chapter leaders have played crucial roles in establishing the Stanislaus County LGBT Center, the San Joaquin Pride Festival and providing LGBT News updates on the local cable stations.

Fresno Pride Goes Regional
by Dan Waterhouse, News Link

This year's Parade and Festival's theme "Out In The Valley“acknowledges that Fresno's Pride has morphed into the Pride event for the Central Valley.
"When we started the Parade and Festival 16 years ago," Fresno Rainbow Pride chairman Jeff Robinson remarked, "we never dreamt that our event would become a regional affair, but we have. Fresno's is the major Pride event between Sacramento and the Los Angeles basin every year."
The Pride Festival will once again take over the streets of Alhambra and Fulton, just south of Olive and west of Van Ness Avenues
"We're expecting a larger number of booths (at the festival) this year," Robinson said. "And, many of them will be new to the festival this time."
The Grand Marshal for this year's parade will be internationally known author Dr. Lillian Faderman.
Faderman, who is a long-time member of California State University, Fresno's faculty, has penned numerous books and articles about the LGBT community. Her best-known books include: Surpassing the Love of Men (1981), Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers (1991), Chloe Plus Olivia (1994), To Believe in Women (1999) and her autobiography Naked in the Promised Land (2003). She's also been a contributor to the Advocate, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, to name just a few.
MTV star Matthew Fashion will be Fresno's first Celebrity Grand Marshal. See the Matthew Fashion article on the Grand Marshals page.
Also being honored as Community Service Award Grand Marshals are Jerry and Kathy Ward, past leaders and activists of the Fresno chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
Riding in the parade as Honorary Grand Marshal will be Fresno city councilmember and friend to the GLBT community Cynthia Sterling.
Headlining this year's Pride Festival is San Francisco's Lipstick Conspiracy.
Lipstick Conspiracy broke out after appearing at a number of Bay Area Pride events in 2004 and being voted Best Girl Band the same year by the Bay Area Guardian.
Conspiracy was featured on the first-ever transgendered stage at San Francisco Pride last year.
The band has been dubbed "pioneers in the transgendered rock explosion."
PlanetOut named the Conspiracy as one of their Featured Artists in 2004.
The band was named by the Stonewall Society as Transgendered Favorite Musician 2005 at the Society's Pride in the Arts Awards last spring.
The Conspiracy is currently recording their latest album, "A Perfect Alibi."
Also headlining the festival will be a Hot Bods contest. All comers are welcome to compete. Prizes of $100 will be awarded to Mr. (Gay/bisexual males and F2M), Ms. (lesbian/bisexual women) and Miss (transgendered females and drag queens). Audience applause will determine the winners.
The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Parade participants will assemble at Palm and Olive Avenues.
The festival will kick off immediately after the conclusion of the parade.
A full day of Pride will end with a 4 and 8 o'clock film screenings by Reel Pride at the Tower Theatre.

Volunteers Needed
The Valley Gay Pride Parade is seeking volunteers for this year's parade and festival.
The Pride committee needs around 50 volunteers to make this event happen. Volunteer shifts are short amounts of commitment, leaving everyone time to have a good time and enjoy the event. Volunteers are needed as parade monitors along the parade route, to assist the police department in keeping people safe and the route clear. There will be positions assigned at each small intersection along the route. Festival volunteers are needed to assist in setting up, cleaning up, working the entry gate. The committee is especially interested in finding volunteers to help with the children's corner: face painting, balloon art, and other activities for the little ones. All volunteers will be able to see the parade, get into the festival site, and receive an official "Out in the Valley" pride t-shirt. Not to mention the feeling of PRIDE for being a part of and supportive to the community. A coordination meeting with the Police Department will be held with all of the volunteers before the pride event. For more information or to sign up online go to: www.fresnorainbowpride.com or call 486-3464

It's Back To the Streets Again
A last minute change has become necessary and the Pride Festival will now be held at our old location for the past two years on Alhambra and Fulton.
Originally the Fresno Rainbow Pride had laid plans for the festival to be held at the Tower Theatre parking lot. But due to complications beyond  the control of Community Link, Fresno Reel Pride and the Tower Theater it has become necessary to move the Festival back to its historic site.
The Pride Festival has been held at this location 13 times and the other 3 times at the small parking lot next to the Chicken Pie restaurant.

Have You Got What it Takes?
A HOT BODS Contest will be held this year at the Pride Festival. Featuring $100 cash prizes for hottest and sexiest body for  Mr., Ms. and Miss.

The Mr. Hot Bod title is for Gay/Bisexual males & F2M. The Ms. Hot Bod title   is for Lesbian/Bisexual women, and the Miss. Hot Bod title is for Transgender females/Drag Queens.
So do you have what it takes to be named a Hot Bod? If you think you got the bod to win or if your friend has the winning hot bod, get all pumped up and enter the contest on the day of the festival.
No application needed, no fee required, just hot fun and some spontaneity. Audience applause will determine the winner. No nudity or partial nudity is allowed.

We Sure Could Use a Buck or Two
We don't know if it is Hurricane Katrina, the budget deficit, or higher gasoline prices at the pump, but what ever the reason our donations from community members is down. And it is these personal contributions that are key to a successful Pride Parade and Festival. To put on this annual Pride event is  very expensive. Almost all of our costs have gone up most likely due to higher fuel prices that our suppliers are passing on to us. We see increases across the board. Last year's event cost nearly $25,000 and while we are attempting to hold down our expenses we are looking at a rather large increase in putting on Pride.
Pride really needs some donations from our generous and kind hearted community members. Members such as yourself. While we do have some great corporate sponsors, it is the small donations from you that are our bread and butter.
So please make a donation today. Donations may be sent to Fresno Rainbow Pride made payable to Community Link and mailed to P.O. Box 4959, Fresno, CA 93744.
You may also make a donation on line by visiting our website and clicking on "$$$ needed" where you can make a donation through our Paypal account on your credit card.

The Other Things That Are Needed
We really need some special folks that will supervise the little ones in our Children's Corner.
Donations of sealed pre-packed juices, bottled water, dried fruits, and other snacks for the roughly 50 plus children who will be provided free "Goodie Bags".
A Children's Corner coordinator with either parenting or child development experience would be fantastic. Some volunteers from PFLAG would be wonderful, HINT! HINT!
Two LIMOs are Needed!
The parade is in need of at least two limos for some of the Grand Marshals to Parade in. Limo companies are asked to donate no more than an hour of their time and the limos in exchange for an ad in the Pride Program Book and a listing on the Pride Web Page as an official sponsor.

Howdy Partners!
Where are all of our BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN COWBOYS and COWGIRLS? This is the valley home of a large country/western/farm/dairy/ranch community. What is a parade without some saddled horse lovers? Please think about coming out and riding your beautiful horse in the Parade. Contact Jeff at 486-3464

Community Service Grand Marshals - Jerry & Kathy Ward

They are the parents every gay child wishes were their own. When their 18 year old son, Darin, came out to them, the Wards were, like many parents, in shock. They said that they had never really thought about gay issues and were at a loss. They turned to their church, friends, and therapist, but often found them to be hostile, uninformed, and not supportive.

Kathy shared that it was a dinner party with 12 couples they were close to, that really ignited her passion. One woman, who was aware that the Wards had a gay child remarked, “All gay people should be exterminated because they are the cause of AIDS.” Kathy shared that she was knocked sideways by this comment and didn’t know whether to be angry or to cry. Jerry piped in and said: “Watch out when you make Kathy mad.”

From this came a soul searching and information gathering time that led the Wards to seek out the Gay community. They happened upon the Gay Pride Parade in L.A., and decided to attend the Pride Festival where they found a PFLAG table. At this table they were befriended by the PFLAG’s National President Adele Starr. They were asked to march in PFLAG in the parade the next day and they decided, “Let's do it!”

When Kathy and Jerry returned home they started organizing PFLAG Fresno. They took on very active roles in the chapter, Kathy as President for many, many years, and Jerry accepting responsibility as Treasurer several times. They have been involved with PFLAG since 1990, 16 years of service and dedication.

What has meant the most to them are the friendships they have made and the people they have helped along the way. Jerry says he is so proud that their son has grown up to be such a nice and accepting individual who is a “good guy.”  Spoken like a true parent.

Darin has returned home to escort his parents on this day of Pride and will be driving his folks, THE GRAND MARSHALS, down the parade route.

Honorary Grand Marshal - Fresno City Councilmember Cynthia Sterling

Councilmember Cynthia Sterling, presenting District 3, was selected for her unwavering support of GLBT community.

Since being elected to the Fresno City Council, Cynthia has participated in every Fresno Pride Parade. When Mayor Alan Autry and the majority of the Fresno City Council refused to consider granting a proclamation for GLBT Pride recognition, Cynthia and her Councilmember Tom Boyajian, District 1, stepped up to the plate and knocked one out of the ball park for the GLBT community. They jointly proclaimed that the day of the Pride Parade should be known as G.L.B.T. Pride Day. Each and every year she has personally attended the Pride festival and presented this honor to its organizers.

Cynthia has been a driving force in streamlining and cut through the red tape that had become a political obstacle in putting on the Pride Celebration in the past, making the process of putting on this event a success.

Cynthia Ann Sterling was born in 1951 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno, Ca. An inquiring and memorable student, she attended Columbia Elementary School and Irwin Jr. High School in the West Fresno area. Her high school years were spent at San Joaquin Memorial High School where she was active in school politics and multiple social activities.

She graduated from SJM in 1969 and went to New Orleans to study at Xavier University, a historically African-American college. During her college years, Cynthia was active in learning about urban development, city planning, and political processes. She graduated in 1973 with a B.A. degree in Political Science.

Cynthia has been active in multiple diverse social and political organizations. She served as the President of Jack and Jill of America, and as a member of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and the Golden Valley Girl Scouts. She became the founder and organizer of the Emerald Debutante Ball for the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, an event that continues to encourage young women from the San Joaquin Valley to pursue their higher education studies and to train to become leaders of the future. She is the past President of the Black Catholics Association and has represented the organization at local, state and national meetings. Cynthia is an active member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

In 2003, Cynthia made history in Fresno, California by becoming the first African American woman to be elected to the Fresno City Council. She is the Chair the City of Fresno Redevelopment Agency.

Councilmember Cynthia Sterling has stood with us, the GLBT community and we now honor her for her support and leadership.

Celebrity Grand Marshal - Matthew Fashion

Hollywood celebrity Matthew Fashion is coming home to be a part of the 16th Fresno Pride Parade and Festival on June 3rd.
"The planning committee is very pleased to announce," said committee chair Jeffery Robinson, "that Matthew will be our Celebrity Grand Marshal this year."
Fashion stated, "I'm unbelievably honored to be asked to be a Grand Marshal!"
The 21-year-old native Fresnan is an unofficial spokesperson for the Trevor Project, and recently spoke at Bullard High about teen suicide issues.
He told News Link that he acted in local theatre and on television. "I did a ton of theatre, but I burned out as a child actor and then decided to focus my life on my friends."
He said he wasn't out, but had a "tough time" when he was in high school. He came out as gay while he was in treatment for eating disorders.
"I wish I had known about things like the Trevor Project" and Fresno's Youth Alliance when he was in high school, Fashion commented.
After completing treatment, Fashion said he moved to Southern California and started building a performing career. He's appeared on such shows as MTV's highest-rated reality dating show ever and highest-rated show in 2005 NEXT, Bravo’s Project Runway, and many others on Comedy Central, Fashion TV LA, TLC, Discovery Health and VH-1, just to name a few.
The Trevor Project is a non-profit organization that focuses on youth suicide issues and particularly on queer youth. The organization's foundation is the Oscar-winning short film Trevor (1994). Trevor tells the story of a 13-year-old gay youth who, when rejected by family and friends, tries to take his own life.
The Trevor Project maintains a 24-hour hotline, seven days a week. Additional information about the Trevor Project and the Trevor Helpline is available by calling (310) 271-8845 or on-line at www.thetrevorproject.org
Fashion commented that he's been asked to help OUTLOUD, a local youth organization working on a variety of issues, including homeless youth and youth suicide.

ENTERTAINMENT LINE UP:

The stars of the Festival will be a San Francisco band - LIPSTICK CONSPIRACY

Lipstick Conspiracy comes to Fresno's & Central Valley's Pride! Named Best Girl Band by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in 2004 on the strength of their debut album, “Don’t Tell a Soul,” and their stunning live performances, the girls' are releasing their sophomore album, "A Perfect Alibi."

Fresno Rainbow Pride 2006 has been chosen as the kick-off of the girls' West Coast tour to support "A Perfect Alibi" with dates in Portland, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose, Santa Rosa, San Francisco and many more...check the website for Intel at www.lipstickconspiracy.com, complete with surveillance photos, reports and downloadable evidence of the girls' former and current whereabouts.

Moving into the semi-finals of Emergenza, the international Battle of the Bands, Lipstick Conspiracy has penetrated the competition as the only LGBT act out of hundreds of Bay Area bands. The girls are poised to move into the finals, slipping under and over the radar, bringing the queer community into the forefront of an otherwise mainstream event. Rumor has it that the Lipstickers are the ones to watch...!

Currently engaged in video filming at an undisclosed location, they will be seen on cable stations just prior to their arrival in various cities on tour. Expect infiltration of your television for your viewing pleasure. Caution is warranted as involuntary hip shaking has been known to occur without warning.

Together since 2003 with numerous performances throughout the Bay Area, the Pacific Northwest and Hollywood, the glamourpusses of Power Pop were named the Transgendered Favorite Musician 2005 for the Stonewall Society's Pride in the Arts Award, featured in the LGBTQ Encyclopedia, and deemed a Planetout.com Buzzworthy Artist.

Originally hailing from near Stockton, vocalist, songwriter and guitarist, Sarafina Maraschino, returns home. This true Valley girl went from shaking almonds and grapes to shimmying onstage...from driving a tractor to dancing in go-go boots. Welcome her back to the nation's horn of plenty in California's "backyard".

My name is Samantha GRACE SCHAEFFER. I'm 19. When I was 15, I was asked to be president of Bullard High's GSA and did that for 2 years. This is my first singing performance at Pride. I read poetry last Pride and the one before that. I've been playing guitar for 3 years. I’m inspired by Ani Difranco and just finished my first album, Lavender. So, please buy one and I  hope to sufficiently entertain you.

My name is SERENA DE CARLO aka EZ. I am the elected 32nd Empress, Fresno’s first Triple Monarch of the Imperial Dove Court de Fresno/Madera

I currently hold the title of Miss Central California Leather 2005-06. I am also the President of the Knights of Malta, a leather and levi social club. I have been active in the community for over 15 years.

If you’re interested in the IDC or Knights of Malta, do not hesistate to contact me:

Every member bring their own style, that gives the variety of music to all patrons.
As a performer for the past 2.5 years, I’ve come into the scene as the born name “The Angel of Darkness & Queen of Vinyl”. My taste in music to perform to is trance, pop, who knows what else - I’m full of surprises. Come and see for yourself!

Formed in December 2005, FRESNO GAY MEN’S CHORUS is a men’s choral group with the goal of being a unique resource in the LGBT community. The chorus rehearses with the support of a Musical Director and an accompanist every Friday. The group is dedicated and offers the opportunity to develop skills in singing parts and musical performance. The mission is to provide a quality choral presentation with a positive image of LGBT pride.

Fresno Gay Men’s Chorus offers short performances for local non-profit organizations to support their fundraising or similar events. FGMC wants to be active in the community and have fun sharing their talent and gay pride. Their own financial support is through private donations and fundraisers with a Christmas concert being planned.

Performers from ELLOS LATINOS:

- Miss Orgullo Gay 06 (Miss Latino Gay Pride)

- Miss Plan B

- TYRA, former Miss Ellos Latinos 2000

My name is VANESSA-JAMES

and I offer greetings and welcome to all on this joyous day of unity and pride!

I was Elected Empress XX of the IDC. I was also Grand Duchess, the first Miss Central Valley Leather, a Cinderella and a Princess and let’s not forget the first and last DIVA of the Year, hosted by the late Central Valley AIDS Team at Pardini’s. I’m glad to know that no title that I’ve held for fundraising and public organizations has been self-declared. But being secure and self confident for all that I stand for, has made all my efforts to raise money for those in need, no more important than of those who don’t have these titles.

I’m just a regular individual with the same issues and choices that everyone else in this world has. I am proud to be to be who I am and understand my purpose in this life and always respect others for the same. Remember, you don’t have to accept a person’s point of view or beliefs. But, to respect them for who they are will always help unify all! Peace and love to all.

MISS MILLIE

Grand Duchess XXII of the Imperial Dove Court and Vanessa’s cousin!

Only 15 years of age, ARIEL is performing at the Festival "to support [her lesbian] mom."

Says her mom, Ashley: “I have been out since she was 3 and she just turned 15 on May 19th.  She is very supportive me.  She also has a lot of friends that are gay.  She also said she would like to support her friends too.  As for her sexual orientation, it seems to be undetermined at this time - her songs, however, reflect the openness of her mind.”

The fairy tale of MISS ANJALI is 5 years old. She is the reigning Miss Gay Stanislaus, Calaveras, Tuolomne and Merced Counties.  She has been involved with the Modesto Court where she has reigned as Grand Duchess, 27, 28, 30, 31.

She is the Host of The Brave Bull-ettes Drag Show every Sunday night in Modesto at The Brave Bull. She has performed in most major cities by invitation (which ones? Too many too list!).

"I am not a professional nor do I do this for a living" comments Miss Anjali. " I like to put on a good show for my community, without them, I would not be here, it is an honor to do what I do for them every Sunday." To learn more about Miss Anjali, visit her website @ www.missanjali.com

HEY there all!

My name is MESHA (mee-sha) hehe...

I’m just ecstatic to even be included to this year’s Gay Pride performance list. Considering I bombed my speech at the Pride Pageant!

For those who missed the pageant, I was announced "PRINCESS of Fresno Gay Pride". You know what... I never received my TIARA! Just kidding!... Well, a little about me: I am a new gal. I’m originally from L.A., but I was raised here in Fresno. I’m a very, VERY undecisive person, so that makes me very spontaneous, in life, that is.

Welcome to a new singing group!! Out of the ashes of the Fresno Rainbow Singers rises "SING OUT".

We wanted a name that reflects our pride in our community and has a little more punch. We are going to be singing classic 60's, 70's and 80's music, plus a little jazz and modern stuff. The goal of the group is to be upbeat and retro!

You can contact us via our website, www.SingOutFresno.com

Hello ladies & gentlemen and flamboyant gentlemen & children of all ages!
Welcome to the beautiful City of Fresno & 16th GLBT Pride Parade & Festival!
I am Fresno's current reigning Miss Fresno Gay Pride DIVA LICIOUS.
I am also the current reigning 2006 Closet Ball Queen & newly invested Imperial Crown Princess Royal to Imperial Dove Court de Fresno/Madera
Since winning the title earlier this year I have traveled to Stockton, Sacramento, as well as graced the stages numerous times here in Fresno at the local bars such as the Red Lantern and The Den. I want to take this time to say that this is more than just a title to me: it is an honor to represent Fresno as Miss Fresno Gay Pride; and to say “Thank You” to the community and I hope I serve you proud.

The current Mr. Fresno Gay Pride is SCOTTY MALDONADO. Having just turned 20, he’s been singing for several years, including Fresno Pacific’s choir. At the pageant he fantastically sang a capella! Scotty is one of the Co-Chairs of OUTLOUD, a youth group.

Last, but not least, this year’s Ms. Fresno Gay Pride is TY RYAN, another Co-Chair for OUTLOUD. She currently works for Gay-Straight Alliance Network in Fresno. During the Gay Pride Pageant she recited quite a raunchy piece of spoken word / poetry, originally written by Alix Olson. Who knows what she’ll do during the Festival?

Ending the festivites will be two contests: Hot Bod Contest, followed by Karaoke Contest!

There will be $100 prizes each for the winners of Mr. Hot Bod (male & FTM), Ms. Hot Bod (female), Miss Hot Bod (MTF & drag queens).  Just come up on stage, winners will be decided by applause.

Also sign up for Karaoke contest - $100 prize for the winner!

GRAND MARSHAL

Richard Stone

Administrative Director for Center For Non-Violence

This year the Fresno Rainbow Pride committee chose as the 2005 Grand Marshal Mr. Richard Stone. Richard has been a long time leader in the GLBT community going back to the early 1970s.

He was a founding member of Gay Resources Organization, which became United Gay Services, which operated one of the community's first gay community centers, and The Central Valley AIDS Team.

Richard was a co-founder and director of the GUS-Line, a gay information and crisis line serving the Gay and Lesbian community of the Central Valley.

Being ever so creative and talented, both right brain and left brain, Richard was a columnist for the Frontrunner, a local monthly Gay and Lesbian Newspaper. In the early 80's Mr. Stone wrote an article for the Advocate News Magazine about Fresno's Gay Life.

As a Gay playwright he penned  “Join and Sunder”, a gay-themed play that was performed as a staged reading at the Unitarian Church.

Richard has continued to contribute to the better of the GLBT community and currently is a program director with the Fresno Center for NonViolence. In his role at the Center he has been the liaison to the GLBT community, helping to bridge the progressive and peace communities with the GLBT community. He is always looking to build coalitions and awareness.

Groups that have benefited from Richard's efforts include programs and agencies that assist those affected and effected with HIV, such as The Living Room and Merced's Lighthouse. Currently CHAANGE (California HIV/AIDS Advocacy Network Grassroots Evolution) has also found a home at the NonViolence Center.

Also finding homes at the NonViolence Center with Richard's help, have been MECA (Marriage Equality California) and the Fresno Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth Alliance, which has been with the NonViolence Center since its inception.

Richard Stone is one of the most committed individuals in our community, a dedicated leader, pioneering founder of many of the early services and organizations focused on the GLBT community's needs.
